Adobe dropping Version Cue from Creative Suite

imageDon’t know how to feel about this one. Adobe finally recognizes the writing on the wall. Version Cue will be phased out and something To–Be–Announced will be phased in as the file–manager of choice.

Did you use Version Cue?

I had high hopes for it way back in 2003 when it was announced. Went to an Adobe special event unveiling and everything. It was exciting in what it promised, and I anticipated it greatly.

But then it shipped, arrived, was installed, and, well, just didn’t have the elegance that I’d anticipated. Of course, it’s only a 1.0 release. Surely it will get better. Surely features will be added. Surely speed will be improved and streamlined.

“Stop calling me ‘Shirley.’”

It never reached maturity and was always just that much too difficult to manage. It fell into the trap of being the fancy, new way of doing things which actually added a couple of extra layers of difficulty to the old way. So many of us had tried–and–true methods of versioning that it was just too clumsy an affair (it required a RESTART!) and never got any more graceful.

RIP Version Cue. We hardly knew ye.
