The new FireWire: S3200

FireWire, a technology originally developed and first implemented by Apple, is about to get a huge speed bump. The previous standard—IEE1394—which transmitted data at a perfectly respectable 800 megabits/minute—is undergoing a transformation. The new standard is referred to as S3200, and will continue to take advantage of many of the same features that already make FireWire in its current form, namely a data pipe that is very difficult to flood (the drive speed providing the data stream will often max out before the pipe will) and a transfer process that requires very little CPU usage. Perhaps most coveted by Mac users --especially admin Mac users in support positions—is the significant power that can be carried on the cable alongside the data, making for “self"-powering devices that are able to power up from the FW bus itself without needing an external power source.
The big news is the speed bump: almost 4x faster than today’s fastest measure, or up to 3.2 gigabits per second. To put it in perspective, today’s fast FW protocol runs at 800 megabits per second. 3.2 Gigabits equates roughly to 3200 megabits, a theoretical boost of 4x.
That’s a lot of speed.
And it may be here before you know it. The IEEE 1394 group—that is, the current keepers of the FireWire standard—are looking to ratify the S3200 standard by Spring, which could result in actual products on store shelves by Summer/Fall 2008.
Time to retire some of those USB2.0 drives you resorted to and build a screamer of a RAID system. FireWire’s back in the game, baby, and it’s going to be something to see!
